5 Actions for Challenging Tasks : Part IV

Action 4 : Take care of You

We live in a busy world with a constant list of to-do’s and deadlines.

One of the things I wish I had known about when I was starting out in my career is this: balance is integral to a healthy lifestyle.

I wish someone had told me that it was okay to rest, to take time out for myself and that my mental health was just as important as my physical wellbeing.

I wish someone had told me that life was not about working all the time. I wish I had known that it was okay to take time out for myself, to rest and recharge and to spoil myself once in a while.

Times have changed since I started my career over two decades ago, and I am pleased to see how the message of wellness is being woven into the Corporate workplace.

Remember to take care of yourself today, and always.

Here are some prompts

1. Body

  • Eat nourishing foods
  • Exercise
  • Get in movement during the day, even if it’s just a short walk or a few stretches
  • Take time away from your desk, even if it’s just ten minutes at a time, to ‘recalibrate’ your senses

2. Mind

  • Take care of your mental health
  • We all react to pressure and stress in different ways
  • Be aware of your triggers and recognise when you might feel overwhelmed
  • This may sound cliché but it’s worth remembering: be kind to your beautiful mind

3. Spirit

  • Take care of your mental health
  • We all react to pressure and stress in different ways
  • Be aware of your triggers and recognise when you might feel overwhelmed
  • If you need to, seek help by reaching out to your trusted inner circle or someone you trust

4. Red Lights

  • Know your boundaries
  • Know: when to take a break, when to delegate, when to ask for help, when to rest
  • Don’t let it all build up like a volcano waiting to erupt
  • Recognise your red lights in time and do something to positively manage it

5. Connect to Connections

  • Make and take the time to connect with others in person
  • Spend quality time with family, friends, pets, loved ones
  • Spend time with people who have a positive effect on you
  • Nourish those relationships. We all deserve love, respect and kindness…
  • That includes your beautiful self!
