5 Actions for Challenging Tasks : Part II

Action 2 : Reach Out for Assistance

Being well prepared is the first step to set yourself up for success when dealing with a challenging task.

The next step is equally important.
Reaching out by asking questions about the project or asking for advice, will ensure that you are on the right track from the start.

When I started out in my career I was too shy to ask any questions, so I would struggle on my own.
Until I discovered how valuable it was to ask the right questions.
That saved me plenty of time and I gained lots of confidence this way.

By reaching out for assistance I let people know that I needed help.
In order to receive help, you often need to ask for it.
You’d be pleasantly surprised by how many people will be delighted to help you.
An unexpected benefit of reaching out in this way, was the connections I formed with people during my early career.

Reaching out, asking questions, and asking for assistance is an indispensable part of your Career Toolkit.

Here are some pointers to get you started

1. Network

  • One of the best kept career resource secrets is networking
  • Networking regularly gives you the opportunity to form career and Industry connections
  • And to meet others who are on a similar career journey as you are
  • I would not be where I am today, were it not for regular networking
  • If you don’t already network then start today. You cannot afford not to!

2. Questioning is a brave move

  • If you need clarity on anything that you are unsure about, then ask questions
  • Don’t be too shy: gather up the courage and ask those questions when you need to
  • If you’re unsure of who to ask – find out
  • Direct your questions to the right people
  • That way, you get the clarity you need straight away and from the correct source

3. Know when to ask for help

  • If you feel overwhelmed or need advice, reach out and ask for help
  • Ask colleagues and peers for advice if you need to
  • If you don’t ask for assistance, how will anyone know that you need help?
  • In order to receive help, you need to ask for it – so ask away

4. Collaborate

  • Realise that you don’t have to do it all on your own
  • Involve other colleagues, peers and team members where necessary, relevant and appropriate
  • Collaboration is a business strength in your career, so draw on it

5. Communicate

  • Proper Communication is an underrated yet very powerful career tool
  • Communicate with respect and intent
  • Think before you speak
  • Use your voice and speak up when you need to be heard
  • Be professional at all times: it is your golden key in the workplace
